Hero or Dick
Welcome to Hero or Dick!
We started this podcast with a blunt question about people: Hero or Dick?
Then we found ourselves asking it about places, traditions, entertainment, and the ordinary stuff we’d never thought to question before. Who gets praised? What gets overlooked? Why are we so sure we know the story?
We pick something that interests us, do our homework, and sit down to talk. We bring facts, opinions, and stories from our own lives, and follow the occasional tangent.
Sometimes we reach a verdict. Sometimes the question gets more interesting.
If that sounds like a conversation you’d want to be part of, join us.

Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Nobody is okay, the microphones are finally working, and we’re doing the only responsible thing: putting a pile of snacks on the table and debating them like it’s a civic duty. From cereal and cookies to chips, queso, and movie theater popcorn, we talk favorites, childhood memories, and why “just a handful” rarely ends there. Listener picks fuel the discussion, a small-town popcorn shop starts sounding like a business plan, and we consider what all this snacking does to our bodies. Snacks: Hero or Dick?
Thanks for listening!

Mic Check And Life Updates
SPEAKER_01Nobody's okay. We're recording, Kate.
SPEAKER_00Oh hey, everybody.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to another episode of Hero Dick. Uh-uh. Season three episode.
SPEAKER_00Season four.
SPEAKER_01Season four. She just fucking told me.
SPEAKER_00Uh it's episode what is it?
SPEAKER_01It's a fifth fourteen. We just did dogs, Kate. It was 13. That's what she told me. Because I sit here for 10 minutes figuring out how to work this equipment.
SPEAKER_00It's working.
SPEAKER_01It took three seasons and we figured out how to work the microphones.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01I think it's working. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I think so. We'll find out.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. You just out. You're going to find out?
SPEAKER_00Out. We're going to find out.
SPEAKER_01Um, well, you want to talk about it? I mean, we just talked for a while.
SPEAKER_00We just talked for a while. I got all my anger out.
SPEAKER_01I know. That's good though. You just got your book there from my wife.
SPEAKER_00Therapy session. Yeah. That was a good book.
SPEAKER_01She's reading another one you gave her.
SPEAKER_00Oh, uh, it's not a Frida McFadden one, though, I don't think. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I don't know either.
SPEAKER_00Cassidy gave me the new Frida one. It's called The Witch. Hey. And it's really good.
SPEAKER_01Timely.
SPEAKER_00It is very timely. Oh. Very good. Will we meet again before Halloween? No. Well, maybe. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01We'll see. That would have been a cool. We could have done something on werewolves or something.
SPEAKER_00We can. Long Cheney. We we still can. I like Lawn Cheney. We can't do, I think last year we did Halloween in general or Halloween candy. I feel like we did that candy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we did so.
SPEAKER_00We'd like to talk about candy. What's our uh today's topic is.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but what's our email again?
SPEAKER_00Oh, I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Shit. Uh oh, hello at heroordick.com.
SPEAKER_00I wrote it down something.
SPEAKER_01We didn't get any emails.
SPEAKER_00No. No, we got some not a spammy one, but somebody selling us something. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's okay. Uh-huh. Um, we have had um more listeners. Good. Downloads. Good. So thank you.
unknownYeah, thank you.
SPEAKER_01Mom and dad.
SPEAKER_00I thought we were out of relatives. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I did.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, if the relatives listened, they're not listening. No.
SPEAKER_01My father-in-law was gonna listen, so if you're listening, Mark, hello.
SPEAKER_00What's his name?
SPEAKER_01Mark. I don't know. He said he was gonna. He saw the shirt. Uh what's her name? Brooke was wearing the shirt. Oh, she was.
SPEAKER_00Oh, and you have your shirt on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I try to keep it clean for Thursdays. Uh-huh. Well, we don't know whatever days. Maybe it's just Thursdays I'll wear it.
SPEAKER_00I think we have to modify mine, but I do like it. It's the uh Jovi.
SPEAKER_01Modify. Oh, you gotta cut it.
SPEAKER_00I gotta cut the knuckles.
SPEAKER_01I like to cut it. She cuts the sleeves and the knuckle.
SPEAKER_00I don't make it like a wife beater.
SPEAKER_01Yep. I don't think you can say that.
SPEAKER_00Oh, we can't?
SPEAKER_01You can say husband beater. That's fashionable.
SPEAKER_00Um what's our topic today?
What Counts As A Snack
SPEAKER_01Snacks.
SPEAKER_00What do you got? I forgot mine.
SPEAKER_01Well, I had my notes. And now I can't get to them.
SPEAKER_00So well, here's what I'll tell you about snacks. Everybody knows what a snack is, small portion of food eaten between meals to satisfy temporary hunger and boost energy. Or to satisfy a craving. The most popular sweet snacks are what do you think?
SPEAKER_01Apples.
SPEAKER_00Fuck. There are no apples. I I do have people say that they like. Okay, hold on, hold on. Sweet. Sweet, like candy, sweet. Um according to one survey. No. MMs.
SPEAKER_01I'm fucking done.
SPEAKER_00Reese's peanut butter cups, and Oreos.
SPEAKER_01Hey, that brings me to my first snack.
SPEAKER_00Do you have an Oreo? Huh? Cereal. Oh, he's got the Oreo cereal. And you know, if you've listened to the cereal episode, well, those are puffs.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Oreo puffs. Post. There's some marshmallows on it. No, I thought there was because when I found these, I'm like, wait a minute, these are puffs. And the other ones were just little rounds cookies.
SPEAKER_00But that still looks good.
SPEAKER_01I mean, the box is open, Kate, but don't worry because the bag is not. I was going to tap into them and didn't.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, those are good because they have the marshmallows in them.
SPEAKER_01One of, you know, and they have Reese's.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they do.
SPEAKER_01But one of my favorite snacks is cereal.
unknownOh, okay.
SPEAKER_01Would you like some Oreo Puffs? Probably. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Good rate this moment, though. I do want to, while you have those out, I will say that uh my friend Lori. Said that her favorite snack as a kid was the marshmallows out of the Lucky Charms.
SPEAKER_01I think you can just buy those. Lucky Charms.
SPEAKER_00But the just the marshmallows.
SPEAKER_01And now you can just buy marshmallows. And Lucky Charms has gone above and beyond, and they have giant marshmallows now. You can get the giant marshmallow edition. I love Lucky Charms. That's always in our pantry.
SPEAKER_00Well, this is turning into cereal rama, but uh I for I my favorite is uh cinnamon toast crunch.
SPEAKER_01Fuck, that's in my pantry right now, too. And you know what? It's just as good. And it stays crispier longer.
SPEAKER_00What?
SPEAKER_01What are they called? Oh, god damn it. I just bought some. They're the multi-meal bag brand. Oh um toast. God damn it. Toast cinnamon toast or something. Cinnamon toast? I don't know. It doesn't even matter.
SPEAKER_00Um, cinnamon toast crunch is my favorite, though. We like to eat it on vanilla cereal.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it's good in yogurt.
SPEAKER_00That's a good snack.
SPEAKER_01Cinnamon toast crunch.
SPEAKER_00Is that their song? Or did you say that?
SPEAKER_01No, I hope that's it, because that's what I think I saw it.
SPEAKER_00I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Back in the day.
SPEAKER_00What do you think is the most popular savory snack?
SPEAKER_01Beef turkey.
SPEAKER_00No. But I bet people like a snack on it. Um, well, probably. I don't know. I just have Lay's potato chips, Doritos slash Cheetos, and Ritz. Who's snacking on Ritz?
SPEAKER_01I fucking love Ritz. They delicious. You know what they go good at?
SPEAKER_00We
Chips Dip And Popcorn Obsessions
SPEAKER_00don't consider them a snack.
SPEAKER_01Easy cheese. Hey, speaking of potato chips, that's a good.
SPEAKER_00Oh, how did that sound effect? Oh, those are good. The Great Lakes brand, potato chip, and what kind do we have here? Kettle cooked Wisconsin, Wisconsin, cheddar.
SPEAKER_01You know where those were from?
SPEAKER_00I don't know, but those are good.
SPEAKER_01They just came from lunch. Oh, those are Brooks side. That's our side item from the lovely place downtown. Blue Moon.
SPEAKER_00Oh, Blue Moon, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Love the Blue Moon Cafe. Shout out. They have good meals. If you want to bet you could have them as well. If you want to throw me another chicken, what's it called? Bacon ranch wrap. Well, is it good?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Anyway, so we got our potato chips.
SPEAKER_00I love potato chips, and many, many people have said potato chips were their favorite snack.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you can't go wrong. There's so many different kinds. But I like a classic, like ruffles with the ridges. Yes. Because you can dip it if you want.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Chips and dips. Probably we'll go through them, but I think that was the that would think that was the favorite.
SPEAKER_01What are they called? Tortilla chips and salsa?
SPEAKER_00Like that too. Did you know that that's a meal to me.
SPEAKER_01Did you know that tortilla chips are day old tortillas? That's how they first came about.
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, because they cut, did you ever cut up tortilla like the we have them because we went to the supermercado in Grand Rapids, the Mexican or Spanish uh grocery store. Okay. And we bought some um shells that are made in Grand Rapids, and you cut them up and then you deep fry them? Uh oh.
SPEAKER_01Sounds good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. They're tortilla chips.
SPEAKER_01Well, now I feel dumb. Everybody knew that.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah. I didn't know that. Well, now you know. Damn it. Don't do it. You should feel smarter for knowing it. I do. What do you think is the most popular snack by weight?
SPEAKER_01Beef jerky.
SPEAKER_00You're guessing that for everything, aren't you?
SPEAKER_01I'm serious. It's not by weight, you mean cotton candy.
SPEAKER_00Uh but it doesn't weigh much. So hot popcorn and then potato chips, just FYI.
SPEAKER_01Do you like microwave popcorn or no? Jesus, shut that down. Do you like the jiffy popcorn?
SPEAKER_00I love the jiffy pop that pops in the thing, but it never works out. It always burns. We just make it. I made some last night. Put a little oil in, put some popcorn in, turn it on, and there you go. I mean, five minutes later, yeah. Oh, you have popcorn. What about those in my hand?
SPEAKER_01Well, I mean, you had those things.
SPEAKER_00Pop or I we had a really good one that had the hand crank turn and it it moved the kernels on the bottom. It was so good, but somehow in one of the moves the top got lost. And now we can't.
SPEAKER_01That's a bummer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I held on to the bottom of it for a long time. I do remember popcorn poppers. This was like in the maybe late 70s, early 80s, their big thing was electric popper, and then you flip it over, and it's a bowl. So yeah. And then there came the air poppers where you put it in and it kind of shoots it out. But I don't even see those anymore. The best popcorn, though. Movie popcorn.
SPEAKER_01Oh shit. Butter it up, man.
SPEAKER_00I mean, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Hey, let me get your you're a savvy entrepreneur, business lady, woman about the world. What do you think about um if Elpina had a uh popcorn store?
SPEAKER_00Especially in the summer for the cruisers and I think it could be a small like this size. Yes, yes. Oh my gosh. I think it could go. You'd have to have like some chocolate or something to Yeah, it can't probably just be popcorn. But you could, but yeah, I think it could. Okay, so here's an example. When we were visiting Jenna and Mike this couple weekends ago in Grand Rapids, we went to Horox.
SPEAKER_01What's that again?
SPEAKER_00And it is uh fabulous, yeah.
SPEAKER_01H-O-R-R-C-C-A-C-C-C-A-C-O-C-K A-C.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I don't know. There's one in Lansing and there's one in Grand Rapids. I think there's another location too. Anyway, there are greenery, they do, you know, garden stuff, and then they have gifty stuff, but they have fabulous grocery parts too. So they have lots of international foods and lots of um, you know, like hard-to-find things, and they have bulk candy.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00And they have a gelato bar, no kidding, which is fabulous because they'll let you test it. And they have a soup bar, no taste tests. Um, but they have a soup bar, but they also have a popcorn bar. And so they have all these different popcorns, you know, because you have sweet, you have savory, you have mixed, you have salt and pepper, you have cheese popcorn, of course, then every kind of cheese. And so they do pretty well with their popcorn. They have some pre-bagged and some you wait for it. And then you think of that cattle corn you can get in the summertime or at fairs or wherever. Yeah, I'm on board. Okay, let's talk after the show.
SPEAKER_01All right, okay. Awesome. Brooke will be happy. That's what she wants to do.
SPEAKER_00I think that's a good idea, Brooke. Let's talk. What do you think is the uh biggest snack by revenue? So
Top Brands Candy And “Healthy” Snacks
SPEAKER_00I'm looking for name brands.
SPEAKER_01Mars.
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, I think Mars encompasses something.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_00Um change something. My voice sounds different. Sounds nasalier.
SPEAKER_01Are you kidding me? I turned the knob. Yeah, we're recording. I turned the knob. You want me to I'll turn your back?
SPEAKER_00No, then fine. Let's just say by revenue, I show Lay's, Oreo, Eminem, Reese's, Doritos, Snickers, Cheetos, Pringles, Kinder Bueno. Do you ever have Kinder Bueno? You know what? I have it. Do you have oh, I thought you were gonna say I have one. Milky Way. I'm giving, I'm breaking out the Milky Way. Milky Ways. You know, I get to disappoint you, but I don't like Milky Way.
SPEAKER_01Are you out of your fucking mind? You're delicious.
SPEAKER_00I'm not a big caramel person. Oh, airheads he's got. Airheads are good. Yeah. I don't think they're good to eat on air. To be out chops. Put them.
SPEAKER_01Get it. Wait, I got more snacks.
SPEAKER_00What else you got in there? What is that?
SPEAKER_01Does that count?
SPEAKER_00Well, so he's got a granola bar.
SPEAKER_01It's a very good value.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Let's talk about granola bars.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00They are a snack. They are. And they a lot of people have them as a snack.
SPEAKER_01You don't like it.
SPEAKER_00Are they the first choice of snack?
unknownUsually not.
SPEAKER_00These are good fillers when you're hungry in between lunch and dinner.
SPEAKER_01This fruit and green one is not good.
SPEAKER_00I do have those. I can eat them in the morning, though. I bet that's the IRS telling me.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, Kate.
SPEAKER_00I'm not eating.
SPEAKER_01We got cliff bars. Hold on, I'm not done yet. Oh, keep going. We're talking about revenue.
SPEAKER_00Um, so revenue, and the last one was Kit Kat.
SPEAKER_01Oh shit. Yeah, those are good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um but under Healthy Snack, a lot of people have granola and draw me and granola bars, freak yogurt, um, nuts and seeds.
SPEAKER_01I love nuts. I do too. Peanuts, cash.
SPEAKER_00I've been on this peanut cake when we bought this giganto thing from Costco. And it, I thought, uh, it was kind of a crapshoot because it's a big thing of just peanuts. It's huge. And just a lot of nuts. It's a lot of peanuts. And it was a lot.
SPEAKER_01You have to have a lot of parties.
SPEAKER_00Well, no, I'm just you want to eat them.
SPEAKER_01I guess.
SPEAKER_00And they are so good and so crunchy and so fresh that I'm gonna have to do.
SPEAKER_01Wait, are they just roasted, salt as peanuts? You know what I have problems with with peanuts now?
SPEAKER_00What? Diverticulitis.
SPEAKER_01That's it. Blockage and pain in the old gorola. Yeah, because they don't digest. Like just a couple handfuls of them.
SPEAKER_00That's sad. I'm so sorry.
SPEAKER_01I had some before. That's though.
SPEAKER_00You can still have peanut butter, right?
SPEAKER_01I fucking love peanut butter.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, peanut butter is good. I don't know. Stick a spoon in it.
SPEAKER_01You ever take and go.
SPEAKER_00It's a snack. It's a snack because I have put it on bananas.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. Sometimes I'll take a cookie out of the cookie jar and put peanut butter on it.
SPEAKER_00Oh, do you dip it in there or do you get a spoon?
SPEAKER_01I get a knife or a spoon. I would never filthy up the peanut butter.
SPEAKER_00Sure. Combos? Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_01I've got a sack of combos, pizza supreme. No, it's not pepper on the phone.
SPEAKER_00I like the uh pepper ones. They're my fav. Yeah. Anybody you got a good snack in uh snack variety.
SPEAKER_01I know now that I, you know, Brooke said that I should go to the store and get some snacks, but I'm like, there are plenty of them.
SPEAKER_00There's some I was headed for the store, but I watched it instead.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, thanks. Thanks for participating.
SPEAKER_00Because my favorite snack is Quizzlers.
SPEAKER_01You don't like licorice.
SPEAKER_00I don't like black licorice, but good licorice is okay.
SPEAKER_01Podcast partner.
SPEAKER_00We're breaking up. Um I I like MMs and I like fresh peanuts. I like Doritos. I like chips and dips.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Chips and dip is my mouth is watering.
SPEAKER_00My favorite so much so that I don't buy it because then I eat the water.
SPEAKER_01Okay, let's say if you do buy it, where do you get what kind of dip do you get? Do you experiment with dips? Or are you a French onion?
SPEAKER_00I usually get French onion. Now I do have a couple people, Daryl being one of them. When he was a kid, he liked funions and munchos.
SPEAKER_01Was he the rush guy?
SPEAKER_00Uh Daryl?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh no. We're rush.
SPEAKER_01We did a thing when we were talking about Rush.
SPEAKER_00Oh no, Daryl wasn't a. I don't know if Daryl likes Rush.
SPEAKER_01Daryl, what do you listen to?
SPEAKER_00Daryl, are you listening to Rush?
SPEAKER_01What are you listening to when you're eating your chips?
SPEAKER_00I know he likes Dolly Parton.
SPEAKER_01Who does it?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. But what I was getting to was uh he then he said, no, ruffles are his favorite with homemade onion dip made out of sour cream and onion soup mix. Your mother has made it. I'm sure. I doubt it, but tells me it's sour cream, and you take the packet of onion soup mix, although Daryl's family used two. Two packets is a lot of sodium.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well.
SPEAKER_00And you stir it up, and it's so delicious. We made it not too long ago.
SPEAKER_01You and I?
SPEAKER_00No. Oh at home we did. So and I did have somebody else, let's see, who else said that?
SPEAKER_01You got a lot there. You better start naming them off here.
SPEAKER_00I know.
SPEAKER_01If I wasn't interrupting, you probably could.
SPEAKER_00I probably could. So let's start at the top and work
Listener Favorites And Kid Nostalgia
SPEAKER_00down.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna eat this milky way where you're talking.
SPEAKER_00Okay, do it. So if you hear anything.
SPEAKER_01I won't chew into the mic.
SPEAKER_00So Jay told me his favorite snack is a biscoff cookie. And I have to say, I'm with you, Jay. They are delicious, and I love to have them with a ginger ale. Maybe it makes me feel like I'm flying somewhere. Um, Brooks, his son, likes, and he is two. He likes goldfish, fishies. Fishies. And uh Harley also went with biscoff because she said she never knew of them until she was an adult. So it feels like a really special snack because she wasn't privy to biscoff. And it used to, you know, that was the plane. When you went on a plane, that was one of the choices, but now you can buy them everywhere.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but you can't buy them in big packages.
SPEAKER_00Um, well, probably Kenneth Costco.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00You can buy like a sleeve of them. I know we bought a sleeve of actually, they weren't just biscoff, though. They were biscoff sandwich cookies. I don't know if they were good. Um, we gave them to the mother-in-law, so I'll have to check with her.
SPEAKER_01Um you think she'd come on the podcast?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00She can't even listen to the podcast, probably. Oh, that's not true. She might. If she might like it. We could hook her up. All right. Um, Krista, another niece, so Jay and Harley, yeah, my niece and nephew, and Krista says apples and peanut butter. Yay! P and I agree with uh I do like apples and peanut butter together. I like uh bananas and peanut butter also. And she was making PBJ tortillas for her kids for a nighttime snack, like little rolls of them. Okay, and her um daughter Ella said brownie and a glass of milk. So we didn't know if that was snack or dessert, but I I classify it as a snack.
SPEAKER_01We'll take it.
SPEAKER_00And then Aria said peanut butter, but then she changed her vote to fruits and vegetables. And her mom said, Well, that's kind of lame. But good for you, Aria.
SPEAKER_01I'm happy to hear vegetables. Same fruits and vegetables, apple, banana.
SPEAKER_00And she's um, I think she's eight.
SPEAKER_01Oh, there's time for her to go the dark side.
SPEAKER_00Uh, yeah, there's still time for her to stage. But the all three of them agreed that the best beverage with every snack is hot chocolate.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00I I gotta agree with that. And then um Leanne says this her favorite sweet is peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. Peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. Yep.
SPEAKER_01Peanut butter is knocking it out of the park here.
SPEAKER_00Peanut butter is popular. What's going on right now? I don't know. Maybe we should buy a stack of peanut butter. Yeah, you know what's a good kind of peanut butter? Yes. Oh, I lost my place.
SPEAKER_01What's it called? It starts with a V.
SPEAKER_00Velvet.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's the best.
SPEAKER_01It is, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00It is.
SPEAKER_01That's what I tried telling my family.
SPEAKER_00Well, we had forgotten about it and saw it somewhere, uh I don't know where, and we bought some. It's terrific.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, it's velvety smooth.
SPEAKER_00I can't eat the other stuff now. I know. And I don't even like I like smooth peanut butter, but sometimes I like chunky. But um, yeah, velvet peanut butter.
SPEAKER_01Isn't that funny?
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, it's so delicious.
SPEAKER_01My wife says, You just like it because it has the old timey looking.
SPEAKER_00It does, because it has those funny little um, I don't know, Skippy's pretty good. Jif is Jif is okay.
SPEAKER_01Peter Pan.
SPEAKER_00Peter Pan's.
SPEAKER_01What do you do you like that natural peanut butter?
SPEAKER_00No, I don't. But I do like sunflower butter.
SPEAKER_01Never had it.
SPEAKER_00I think I got it at Trader Joe's.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Yeah. Was that downtown here on Chisholm?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, right, right now, eat of Michigan. Good. And Leanne likes salt for salty snack, chips and salsa. Salsa, salsa, salsa. People like chips and salsa.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's salsa is like the number one condiment.
SPEAKER_00Salsa? I'm pretty sure. I believe it. Yeah, it's a good, I had it today already.
unknownCome on.
SPEAKER_01On your eggs?
SPEAKER_00I did. Are you kidding me? I know. I had a tortilla show, a little cheese, and I had a little bit of cubed ham, yeah, you grilled up, and I put an egg on it, and you put some salsa, and my favorite condiment, sour cream. Nice, it was delicious. Yes. Marcy's going fresh fruit, but all sweet, she said. And then she did say, I snack more than I eat meals.
SPEAKER_01It's more fun. Variety.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And you can kind of graze all day. You don't have to. Sit down and eat a big meal. Now, here's a snack that I am very intrigued by and going to try. This is from Jennifer. She said graham crackers and a frozen Hershey. Like a cold s'more with no marshmallow. I'm going to try it. I haven't tried it, so I can't say.
SPEAKER_01I could see where it would be good, but that would be hard to break.
SPEAKER_00Uh yes. Yes. And we talked about Daryl's. He likes the onion soup mix dip. Now, Brian, uh, when he was a kid, he liked bugles on his fingers, so he could pretend he had long fingernails. Yep. Yeah. And now his snacked uh of choice is dots, pretzels with peso dip.
SPEAKER_01You know, dots makes a damn good pretzel.
SPEAKER_00They do make a really good. I had given up on pretzels. Well, I had not been eating pretzels much. Sometimes I get the Snyder, and I have to say the ones I like are those hot, not hot mustard, funny mustard broken pieces.
SPEAKER_01You know, here's my thing with pretzels.
SPEAKER_00What she likes.
SPEAKER_01They're so noisy. Like I'm weird about noises, and like if we're sitting on everyone, like I'll look over and say to Brooke, I'm like, You have a bowl of gravel. But that's that's bad because I'll sit there and eat them and she doesn't say anything to me. I'm a dick. Yeah, you are. Yeah. Not a hero. No hero here. Uh but uh pretzels in general. I just want to say that just a good sourdough pretzel is delicious. And uh Meyer has those butter braid pretzels. Those are good. Oh, they're the best.
SPEAKER_00They are very good. I like to dip them in um queso.
SPEAKER_01Queso, man. White queso.
SPEAKER_00Down dots and queso. My second place is uh better-made barbecue chips. Barbecue chips are good.
SPEAKER_01Popular.
SPEAKER_00They might be my first place. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01You like a Pringle?
SPEAKER_00I mean, if there's nothing else, and I will say they travel well because of their container.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But they're kind of mush.
SPEAKER_01I always want Pringles and I get them and I eat them, and I'm like, I gotta stop cake because I buy them all the time when they're on sale. Two for seven or whatever.
SPEAKER_00Wow, that's not even a good deal.
SPEAKER_01It's not. Well, for the tall, tall boys, you know.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. We just bought some and because we were traveling. Excuse me. And so traveling wise, yes, because you gotta travel chips. Travel chips.
SPEAKER_01But then you're dead serious.
SPEAKER_00Uh let's see. What Emily said when she was a kid, she liked whales, which are a version of goldfish. Of goldfish. And her sister Ava also said whales. And I said, Is that the only snack your mother fed you? She said, maybe. But now uh Emily likes sweet chili Doritos.
SPEAKER_01Oh, those are good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And Ava likes pork rinds. No, she likes uh kettle jalapeno chips. Oh shit. So they both went to the to the spicy side after those blando whales.
SPEAKER_01That's what happens.
SPEAKER_00Uh anybody say pork rinds? Uh no. Nobody I talked to said pork rinds, but we had some the other day. We bought them at the supermarket uh in um Grand Rapids, fresh ones. And then I reconstituted them in the air fryer.
SPEAKER_01Reconstitute.
SPEAKER_00In the air fryer.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Because they were like already, they were fresh pork rinds in a package.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00That we bought at a deli.
SPEAKER_01Gotcha.
SPEAKER_00And then we took them home, and a few days later they weren't so crispy. So I put them in the air fryer. They were okay. You know, not nutsy about them.
SPEAKER_01We had fresh like pork rinds at a restaurant in Midland.
SPEAKER_00Oh, they used to make them somewhere in town. I can't remember where. Oh, they're so good if they're fresh. That's totally different. It's totally different.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Don't even eat a pork rind out of the bag.
SPEAKER_01Well, I do. Do you? I eat them out of the big computer.
SPEAKER_00Did you know you can get microwave ones? Come on.
SPEAKER_01Why are you microwaving them?
SPEAKER_00Well, because they come in a package.
SPEAKER_01Like uh No, I only buy a bag and plastic container. I don't know where you're talking about. Your tax bracket's different, Kate. I can't buy those.
SPEAKER_00It's like a dollar.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00I I don't even know where we got them. Um, but we we we had two packages. One we ate. It was okay. If you like pork rinds, it was probably delicious. And the second one is the hot variety, so I'm not eating it.
SPEAKER_01You were just talking about how you like hot stuff, though.
SPEAKER_00I know I don't.
SPEAKER_01What? You just I swear I'm gonna play this back, and you said something about I'm gonna look later.
SPEAKER_00Emily and Ava like hot stuff.
SPEAKER_01No, you did too.
SPEAKER_00What?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. You said something?
SPEAKER_00Doritos aren't hot.
SPEAKER_01You said something about some spicy thing you like.
SPEAKER_00I banked a different. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Anybody say Cheez Its?
SPEAKER_00No. No Cheez Its.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I like Cheez Its. I damn it.
SPEAKER_00But a lot of people, not a lot of people, a few people said, uh, like Julie, she said, my favorite snack is the same as a kid and now, and it is Swiss cake roll.
SPEAKER_01Oh man. I went to Dollar General when I was at the cottage last.
SPEAKER_00I bought a whole case of those things and ate them.
SPEAKER_01I'm an oatmeal pies. Oh, they like the oatmeal pies. Swiss cake roll as we okay.
SPEAKER_00I asked her this and she said, yes. Do you unroll it? No, I just you just shove it in your mouth. I used that much as a kid, and I know if you have time, you know, it's kind of fun to unroll it and leave it eat it by layer. You know, if you want to prolong your lovely snack. She also likes peanut butter.
SPEAKER_01No, was she talking about little Debbie's? Yeah. Yeah. Swiss crazy. Any little Debbie stuff.
SPEAKER_00Is there any kind uh nobody else makes Swiss black rolls? Swiss, yeah. Who?
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Nobody.
SPEAKER_01I've seen them, Kate. But little Debbie has a nice line of snacks. She does. Zebra cakes, cosmic brownies, oatmeal pies.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. Notting bars.
SPEAKER_01Damn it.
SPEAKER_00Paul likes nutty bars, I think. Let's say let's go to where was his? Um yeah, nutty bars. Famous Amos cookies. Oh, yeah. Also likes an eye of great. And we even just bought some because we'll be traveling. So they come in those little um packages, you know. You get like three, but still. Yeah. And Swiss cake rolls. Paul likes the Swiss cake rolls. Did you know that?
SPEAKER_01Or did it just lead to that?
SPEAKER_00No, it led to that.
SPEAKER_01That's awesome.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But as an adult, he did say, as an adult, I feel like I need to eat, and I do eat more apples as my snack. Here's what I like to eat, but here's what reality brings me.
SPEAKER_01Well, you need to eat the Swiss cake rolls in the nutty bars, and then you eat an apple to balance it out.
SPEAKER_00Well, he's saying just go for the healthy. After school, though, his mom would make um cookies. My mom didn't do that, so I was always very envious of the moms that had the after school cookies. He would he would watch them uh or have the cookies and watch Gilligan Silicon. Oh. And the bedtime snack, and and this was the rule in our house too. After dinner, you can have one snack. One snack. One night I foolishly ate a banana. That counted as my snack. Never again, sir. Never again.
SPEAKER_01You got tricked into eating a banana?
SPEAKER_00I did. I was so pissed. I still remember going, that's not a snack. That's fruit. Nope, that's your snack. Oh, you will never catch me eating a banana after dinner.
SPEAKER_01I was gonna bring a banana.
SPEAKER_00I do like bananas.
SPEAKER_01Oh. Not a dinner. If you experience, I do, puffiness in the face and whatnot, a banana will help alleviate that because of potassium. You knew that too.
SPEAKER_00They're high in potassium.
SPEAKER_01You fucking knew the thing about the tortillas and all the banana.
SPEAKER_00You think I'm an idiot?
SPEAKER_01Maybe you need to get the new podcast person. You need a smarter person on here.
SPEAKER_00His so his bedtime, Paul's bedtime fancy snack was cheese popcorn. Oh. I like that too.
SPEAKER_01Damn, but there are a lot of snackers here.
SPEAKER_00And chips and dip, of course. That was like a holiday thing. So let's see. What Doug liked when he was a kid, he said smarties are anything sweet. Now, chips and dip. We're with you, Doug. Elaine says when she was a kid, she liked the hostess chocolate cupcakes. Not little dubbies, but a hostess.
SPEAKER_01Wasn't there a um hostess made the Twinkie too?
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. Cassidy said there's a few snacks I don't like them. That's Twinkies.
SPEAKER_01I don't mind a Twinkie.
SPEAKER_00I don't like them. I think her too spongy.
SPEAKER_01The reason I laugh so much on this podcast is because if you could see the expressions on Kate's face when she's talking about stuff.
SPEAKER_00You never will. We will never video this.
SPEAKER_01We're videoing this one right now. No, we're not broadcasting it live.
SPEAKER_00And Elaine's go-to now is pretzels. Kathy just says ice cream all the time.
SPEAKER_01Are you making these people up, or do you really know this many people?
SPEAKER_00These are real people, right? Elaine and Kathy, they listen all the time. Okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, thank you for listening.
SPEAKER_00Uh Greg says, anything chocolate? Ava, we already went over hers. Um Paul and Lori said uh in the in her AM snack is a boring granola bar.
SPEAKER_01I got some here for you.
SPEAKER_00You know, you gotta have a filler. But when she goes in the afternoon, she wants salty, salty crackers or potato chips.
SPEAKER_01How were you, let's say, after you eat dinner?
SPEAKER_00I'm pretty good. How are you? What do you mean?
SPEAKER_01No, like do you crave a snack?
SPEAKER_00I usually like it to have a snack after dinner, not a banana though.
SPEAKER_01No banana.
SPEAKER_00Last night we I had uh I made popcorn. It was delicious.
SPEAKER_01Do you think chocolate chips out of a bag are a snack?
SPEAKER_00I do, and I've done it.
SPEAKER_01I knew it.
SPEAKER_00Put it in peanut butter and eat it like um yeah, or sprinkle it on ice cream. I like the mini chocolate chip. Ice cream's a great snack. Ice cream chocolate fabulous snack.
SPEAKER_01Those little Andes mints broken up. Oh, that's good too.
SPEAKER_00Anything, really. Well, almost anything. Pretzels? No.
SPEAKER_01Butter? No. Stick of butter? Is that a snack?
SPEAKER_00A stick of butter is not a snack. It's not a meal.
SPEAKER_01You've never had a I'm gonna say I have never had it. There's this roll butter. Uh it's some Irish roll butter or something like that we've been buying.
SPEAKER_00Oh, the Irish butter.
SPEAKER_01It's so delicious. You take it just a little bit and plop it in your pie hole. You ever do that?
SPEAKER_00I do not.
SPEAKER_01I don't either. I don't. I do.
SPEAKER_00But I have like put it on a cracker, put it on a rit.
SPEAKER_01I like making little Ritz cracker sandwiches with cheese or with butter. You know, it squeezes out the little holes.
SPEAKER_00It does. Oh man. Yes.
SPEAKER_01Life is good, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00Um, yeah, snacking wise. Um, and I just wanted to mention Beth because um is she emailing it to you, type of thing to your ad this moment?
SPEAKER_01No, I didn't write it down.
SPEAKER_00Uh she says chips and dips, snack for the win for even pretzels and dips. But she said, I think as a kid the only snacks that we had were chips and popcorn and those sugar wafer cookies.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the thin yeah.
SPEAKER_00They're different. They're like strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla.
SPEAKER_01Those are pretty good. Very light.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't know. That's not really a snack that's not. What? It's all snacks, it's between meals. I guess I guess anything like that, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Anything?
SPEAKER_00I will also say that Alfie the dog likes begin strips as his snack. Begging, begging, begging.
SPEAKER_01You want to know one of my favorite snacks. No, you don't, I know, and I talk too much. And my son and my daughter.
SPEAKER_00What are they like? Are you ready? There it is. Yes. Smoked oysters. Is that a snack? I have those as a meal. I love them.
SPEAKER_01On a cracker?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01That is a right now? I don't have any crackers.
SPEAKER_00No, we don't have crackers. No, we're not eating them on an Oreo crack.
SPEAKER_01We could put it on oysters. They're delicious. Nutritious, too.
SPEAKER_00When I'm home alone, sometimes I have them as a meal. Just on crackers. Like a little cheese on the side. Yeah. And so um a lot of snacks are uh happen by accident. Chocolate
Snack Origins And Weird Facts
SPEAKER_00chip cookies happen by accident. Did you know that Ruth Graves Wakefield of Toll House Inn? She ran out of baker's chocolate. So she just cut up a candy bar thinking it would melt. It didn't. And we have chocolate chip cookies because of it.
SPEAKER_01Thank you, Ruth.
SPEAKER_00Thank you, Ruth. What was her whole name again? Ruth Graves, Wakefield. She worked at Toll House Inn. You know, that's why they're Toll House cookies. Potato chips, George Crumb.
SPEAKER_01Come on.
SPEAKER_00Or chum.
SPEAKER_01So it probably was crumb.
SPEAKER_00I think it's crumb. C-R-U-M. So he was a chef. He invented potato chips in 1853.
SPEAKER_01Where did he invent them?
SPEAKER_00Well, let me tell you. He did it, I don't know where he was, but he did it as a spiteful joke for a customer that kept complaining that his fried potatoes were cut too thick. So he's like, You want thin potato? MFR? Yeah. Here you go. Sliced it thin. Potato chips were born. How about Pez? Nobody says that's her favorite snack, but we've all had Pez.
SPEAKER_01We have.
SPEAKER_00Pez started in 1948 as a peppermint smoking session or cessation. So stop smoking. Stop smoking tool designed to look like a cigarette lighter. So here's my question. If you don't want, if you're taking something because you don't want to smoke, why would you make it look like a lighter? I don't know. I haven't figured that one out. And then uh Presbyterian Minister Sylvester Graham, guess what he invented?
SPEAKER_01Graham crackers.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Thank you. Oh my God.
SPEAKER_01I was going to say Sylvester the long.
SPEAKER_00He invented it as a plain, wholesome food meant to curb impure or passionate thoughts. Like those potato chips were causing it. I don't know. And did you also know there was no chocolate and white chocolate?
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00There's no chocolate and white chocolate. It's cocoa butter, sugar milk, and vanilla.
SPEAKER_01Hey, I'm jumping off topic again. But it has to do with chocolate and chocolate bunnies.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I like chocolate bunnies.
SPEAKER_01We've probably covered this because we talked about Easter, didn't we?
SPEAKER_00Do you eat their ears off of them?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you do.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Do you like the hollow or the solid?
SPEAKER_00Well, uh Okay. That's a good question because my first reaction is hollow because you get more chocolate, or a solid because you get more chocolate. But then I think I like biting into that hollow chocolate.
SPEAKER_01I like the candy eyeballs on those things. I like the hollow ones too. Do you like the white chocolate at all? They're all kind of plasticky, aren't they?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. You have to buy a good one and you have to buy it.
SPEAKER_01Like Russell Stover. No, that's even cheaper.
SPEAKER_00I think that's good anymore.
SPEAKER_01That's good.
SPEAKER_00Like a homemade one.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00Like from a candy store.
SPEAKER_01So, like if you did homemade chocolate bunnies and popcorn, that'd be a good store. I bet you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think so. Well, I was thinking fudge at first, and I'm like, eh, no, because everybody in Michigan does fucking fudge. And I don't know, I'm kind of done with fudge. No, I am. That's uh Cassidy's fault. Or thank you, Cassidy. Why? Because she worked on Mackinac Island for years and she'd bring home fudge.
SPEAKER_01You got fudged out.
SPEAKER_00We had boxes and boxes of fudge in our freezer. And I'm not sure. It's too much fudge. I haven't eaten fudge foods. So I guess I have her to thank for that, really. Thanks, Cass.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I got more room for Doritos.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Spicy ones.
SPEAKER_00Um, and okay, two more little facts about candies and snacks. Um, Hydrox, you know, the Hydrox cookies, they look like an Oreo.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00They came first.
SPEAKER_01Oh, did they?
SPEAKER_00They did, and Oreo ripped them off. Oreos are a copy of theirs.
SPEAKER_01Do they do double stuff? Hydrox?
SPEAKER_00Probably.
SPEAKER_01I like double stuff.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I like double stuff. There's there's almost too many flavors of Oreos.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But you know what my favorite is a double stuffed, dipped, double stuffed mint. No, double stuffed.
SPEAKER_01And peanut butter?
SPEAKER_00No, you dip them in chocolate, you get the like at Christmas. Oh, yeah, okay. And oh, those are freaking delicious. Damn it. Okay, did you know this? You're snacking on Fruit Loops, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And there's many colors, right? How many flavors?
SPEAKER_01One.
SPEAKER_00They're all the same flavor.
SPEAKER_01They lied to you though. They said they're not.
SPEAKER_00Amazing? Amazing, dude. Fruit loops, all colors are the same flavor. I feel like that's kind of a rip-up.
SPEAKER_01It is. Yeah. All that dye.
SPEAKER_00And so, all right.
Ultra-Processed Snacks And Final Verdict
SPEAKER_00Now we we've talked about snacks, snack, snacks and how we love them. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. What do you think? Most snacks are ultra processed. Not just processed, ultra processed.
SPEAKER_01They will change your fucking genetic making.
SPEAKER_00No nutritional value. Excess sugar, salt, fats, chemicals, diabetes. Lots of fruits and vegetables you can snack on. But man, they are Doritos. No.
SPEAKER_01They're not Oreos.
SPEAKER_00No. So as with many, many things, snacks are a hero in moderation. But if you eat like the snacks in front of you all day every day, that's that's probably not good.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00That would be dickish. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't think they were meant to be dickish. They're meant to be heroic. But like other things, we're abusing them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But there's way too many snacks. Look at all this packaging in front of us. Where's this packaging gonna go?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, hopefully in the recycle.
SPEAKER_01None of this is going to recycling. Well, no, you can't recycle this stuff. Can you?
SPEAKER_00What?
SPEAKER_01Not an alpino.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. Beat these quick. They got an expiration beat on them.
SPEAKER_01Of when? Well, did they pass already? No.
SPEAKER_00Did that stop you?
SPEAKER_01No. If it's sealed, it don't matter.
SPEAKER_00I don't have a fast buy. I think that's a wake off. We talked about a lot of snaps.
SPEAKER_01You did. We've got a lot of contributors. Do all those people listen?
SPEAKER_00Uh I don't know, but they all have input.
SPEAKER_01That's a I appreciate that. I hope they listen.
SPEAKER_00At least download us, you guys. Even if you're not listening.
SPEAKER_01People do that. They do. Download it.
SPEAKER_00That's all right. Maybe they'll listen later.
SPEAKER_01Um no, this was fun. I'm sorry we didn't eat any of the oysters. I know you were looking forward to that.
SPEAKER_00I do love smoked oysters.
SPEAKER_01I can't believe you hate Milky Way.
SPEAKER_00I don't like caramel. Like it's too you don't like caramel? It's too stringy for me.
SPEAKER_01In anything?
SPEAKER_00Most everything.
SPEAKER_01Like no caramel moose tracks or whatever it is, ice cream.
SPEAKER_00I mean I'll eat it, but not my first choice. No stickers, no, no candy bars with it in there, please. Personal choice. I think that's still a thing in our country, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_01Should we talk about no?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01One episode I'd like for you and I just to go fucking crazy about what's going on in the world. People would tune us out.
SPEAKER_00We will someday. Someday.
SPEAKER_01Um okay.
SPEAKER_00I think that's what we got about snacks. So if you have any comments about it, please email us at hello at hero or dick.com. Okay.
SPEAKER_01We'd appreciate it. And I'll tell you what, if you email us um and you live within the United States and you tell us what your favorite snack is, I'll I'll buy it and send it to you.
SPEAKER_00Wow, that's a big commitment. I thought you were gonna give them a t-shirt.
SPEAKER_01Only the first five no t-shirts are gone, no. Nobody wanted them.
SPEAKER_00We need to reorder some swag. We got uh coffee cups, too.
SPEAKER_01Coffee cups, t-shirts.
SPEAKER_00But email us if you're interested in that. Socks. I don't get any socks. We can do socks, we can get them. I'm not knitting them, but yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh man, could you?
SPEAKER_00I could, but I'm not.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Well, um, we better get going.
SPEAKER_00Okay, all right. Thanks.
SPEAKER_01Thanks, everybody.
SPEAKER_00Bye.
